What happens when you write outside of or combine literary genres?
Who are some exciting hybrid forms writers of our time?
How can other mediums (music, visual art, dance) inspire writing?
In this hands-on creative writing course, participants will work with in-class, interdisciplinary prompts to inspire innovative writing that blends literary genres (such as fiction, poetry, playwriting). Participants will also experiment with form. The class will explore readings from “hybrid forms” writers like Ian Williams, Claudia Rankine, Anne Carson, and Jenny Odell; and from other writers experimenting with technology or interdisciplinarity in their writing practice. We will also look at performance, dance, and visual art pieces as sites of inspiration for writing. Participants will have the opportunity to:
* Create a portfolio of writing through in-class prompts;
* Exchange and respond creatively to hybrid forms readings;
* And work on an independent project on which they will receive group and individualized feedback.
While this course will offer craft and writing tips, the core focus will be on collaboration, innovation, exchange, connection, and finding your authentic voice as a creator.
