Foundational Myths, Legends, and Speculative Thought in Antiquity

Classics

Course Description

In antiquity, explanatory myths, legends, and speculative thought were foundational in shaping and sustaining enduring civilizations. This course will analyse some of these and the existential questions they posed. Looking at a wide array of ancient texts, we will explore the perspectives of ancient Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Hebrew, Persian, Greco-Roman, Indian, and Chinese civilizations, asking ourselves:

How did myths and speculative thought in these civilizations seek to explain the creation of the universe, god(s), and humans? What were the legendary origins and cultural heroes of each civilization?  How did  thinkers in these various cultures view the natural world and humankind’s impact upon it?

How did writers and thinkers in different civilizations characterize the sexes; describe love and ecstasy; distinguish reality and illusion? What was considered the ideal government? The ideal society? How were power and politics viewed in these civilizations?

In addressing these questions, we will inevitably be drawn into discussions of how each civilization confronted issues that continue to concern and intrigue us, such as the following: What is the purpose of life? What happens at death? Is there a path to eternal life? Why is there suffering, evil, sin? How should one lead a good life?
