Art History

Course Description

Ce cours se déroulera en français et en anglais. Une compréhension des deux langues est recommandée. // This course will be held in English and in French. An understanding of both languages is recommended.

This lecture course will explore the emergence of different artistic movements throughout the 16th century on the Italian peninsula. We will learn about key artistic developments, such as the establishment of classical canons, and how they eventually gave way to the first international artistic trend, Mannerism. Some fundamental questions addressed will include: How did the flourishing of different cities shift the centres of attraction from Florence to Rome and Venice? What role did the Catholic Church and its representatives play in art patronage? The works of some of this period’s most famous artists, including Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and others, will be examined.
