Medieval and Renaissance Art: Treasures Big and Small – The Thomas More Institute Visits the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts

Description

Join the Thomas More Institute for a one-day course on Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance works of art! Led by Anita Grants, instructor of the Thomas More Institute’s Discovering Art lecture courses, the group will explore works from the permanent collection on display in the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion for Peace at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA). Here, paintings and sculptures are presented alongside personal devotional objects, altarpieces, and architectural elements from Northern Europe and Italy. This arrangement highlights not only the artistic changes which occur, but also the differences between works created in Northern Europe and those created in Italy.

The day will begin with a lecture at the Thomas More Institute (3405 Atwater Ave.) This will be followed by a break, during which light refreshments will be served at the Institute. Participants will make their own way to the MMFA, where the class reconvenes in the afternoon. It is a 15 minute walk from the Thomas More Institute to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Alternatively, the 24 bus line on Sherbrooke Street can also be taken.
