Beginner’s Guide to the Blues

Music

Course Description

Explore the history of blues music in this four-week lecture course by tracing its roots from the spirituals and work songs of the African American South through its evolution into a foundational genre of American music. Course participants will examine the cultural and historical contexts that shaped the blues, from the Mississippi Delta to Chicago’s electric blues scene, and listen to key artists such as Robert Johnson, Bessie Smith, Muddy Waters, and B.B. King. We will also investigate how the blues influenced rock, soul and more, leading up to its presence in contemporary music today. Through listening sessions, readings, and discussions, we will gain a deeper understanding of the blues’ enduring legacy and its impact on global music culture.
