Creative Writing: The Art of the Short Story

Writing

Description

Are you looking for your unique “voice” as a writer? Do you want to learn how to use dynamic and effective language to write impactful short stories?

This writing course will focus on understanding the structure of the short story and what makes it unique as a genre. We will pay particular attention to elements like voice, persona, characterization, point of view, description, dialogue, and writing effective beginnings and conclusions. We will also explore several classic short stories, as well as more recent ones to help participants understand techniques and devices successful authors have used.

Weekly assignments will be shared, discussed, and critiqued by members of the group and will receive regular feedback from the instructor. Beginning with a step-by-step approach through short writing assignments, participants will work toward creating a completed and revised short story by the end of the twelve weeks. The final class will conclude with a discussion of further resources for writers as well as strategies for showcasing your work.
