Have you ever wanted to know more about the wide-ranging permanent collections of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA)? How can we begin to make sense of the various styles, techniques, and subjects presented? The Discovering Art series at the Thomas More Institute offers guidance on appreciating the works on display, with this course focusing particularly on depictions of landscapes.
Until the 19th century, landscapes were not considered suitable as the main subject of a painting. How did landscape painting gain acceptance in the world of art? These art history lectures will consider the role of the landscape in paintings, originally as a backdrop for other subjects, such as portraits, historical and religious works, and then as a subject in its own right. We will examine the factors that influenced this change in status and engage with pieces face-to-face, through a combination of lectures and visits to the MMFA.
Two in-person lectures will introduce the works we will be exploring in our museum visits. The week following each lecture, we will meet at the museum to engage with the art discussed directly.
