Experience and the Limits of Explanation

Philosophy

Description

This discussion-based philosophy and social science course will explore the methods used and the limitations of our attempts to understand experience. Our experience consists of the ongoing series of events that unfold over the course of our lives. Yet, when viewed in retrospect, certain events—despite being separated in time—seem to manifest a coherence and connectedness that resists explanation in terms of chance. What are we to make of this?

Through discussion and selected readings, we will investigate the nature of raw experience (prior to attempts at interpretation), the limits of causal explanation, the relationship between time and meaning, and the possibility that coherence is not constructed, but revealed.

The following questions will be central to, and will guide, our discussions:

  • How do we make sense of events that only seem meaningful in retrospect?
  • To what extent do interpretation and memory shape the coherence we perceive in our experiences?
  • Is meaning something we actively construct, or something we come to recognize over time?

Our goal is not to provide definitive answers, but to sharpen attention, deepen inquiry, and explore the limits of how we understand experience.
