This monthly art appreciation course will give visual artists, who use photography in one way or another, an opportunity to present their work to an interested and informed audience. Participants may choose either to bring framed physical pieces or digital files to be projected in the classroom. Participants will be encouraged to share ahead of time a short written piece that sets out their purpose or describes what inspired the particular body of work that they wish to show.
The workshop is intended to promote respectful dialogue about photographic seeing and to deepen our understanding about its language. How does the world appear through a lens? Except in the domains of medicine and science, what does a photographic image say that we didn’t already know? Why bother to create works of photography when so many images are already accessible, especially with the advent of AI? What’s happening “inside us,” when we’re actually taking a photograph or looking at it at a later date? How does memory contribute to the present experience, or distort it? How has the medium transformed the artist who uses photography?
