The Odyssey from the perspective of faithful Penelope; the Trojan War told by Helen—recent decades have seen a rise in novels that reimagine traditional Greek and Roman myths from female perspectives. Using the works of contemporary authors such as Natalie Haynes, Margaret Atwood, and Madeline Miller, this discussion-based course will compare how female characters are portrayed in classical literature to how they are portrayed in modern reinterpretations. In doing so, we will tackle various questions: How do we present old stories to new generations and audiences? What shifts are created in the storytelling by putting historically neglected perspectives to the forefront, such as those of female characters? Does it have an impact on how we interpret these epic stories? How are power dynamics represented in the original texts compared to the retellings? And finally, considering the immense popularity of the authors examined, have they succeeded in creating new female mythic archetypes?
