Dive into the rich world of jazz and its subgenres in this 6-week music history lecture course, which will trace the development of “post-bop” jazz from the early 1960s to the present day. Building on the foundations of bebop and hard bop, post-bop emerged as a more experimental and harmonically advanced form of jazz, shaped by artists like Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and John Coltrane. Participants will explore key albums, stylistic innovations, and the broader social and cultural movements that influenced the music during this transformative period. The course will also examine how post-bop has continued to evolve through fusion, avant-garde, and modern jazz movements, influencing generations of musicians. Through guided listening, analysis, and discussion, participants will gain insight into the creativity, complexity, and lasting significance of this fascinating musical genre.
