The Spirit of Inquiry: 80 Years of Learning at the Thomas More Institute

Literature

Course Description

Have you ever wondered how the Thomas More Institute has thrived, and why it has been so cherished throughout its 80-year history? What is its raison d’être? And how has this  never ceased to appeal and satisfy on a fundamental human level? To understand its longevity as a humanistic institution, we will ask the following:

Why do questions matter? How can we stimulate, rejuvenate and maintain the spirit of inquiry, wonder and curiosity that we first knew as children, to establish it as the wellspring of adult human learning? What is the role of the imagination? How do we recognize and follow through on the questions that are present just below the surface, waiting to be brought to light? This course will give full rein to the Institute’s and our own wondrous desire to know. Readings will include selections from Sophie Haroutunian-Gordon’s Interpretive Discussion, Bernard Lonergan’s Insight, and Plato’s Symposium, as well as various poems and short stories.
