Dressing Up: Mugler, Fantasy, & the Transformative Power of Fashion

Course Description

Why do children play dress-up? How does what we wear influence how others treat us? From 18th century court dress to 21st century athleisure, what part does fantasy play in fashion? How do our clothes articulate our anxieties and ambitions? In costume or camouflage, in dressing down or to the nines, how does clothing transform our identity? Why does Red Riding Hood have no name other than her most salient article of clothing? What part does humour play in fashion, and how can our choice of garments transform the mood, even the atmosphere, around us? How does the tension between comfort and fabulousness play out in our fashion lives?

In this 6-week course, we will consider these and other questions using as the basis for our discussions selected readings and visits to the MMFA’s blockbuster exhibition Thierry Mugler: Couturissime.

Please note, participants will be responsible for securing their own entry to the MMFA.

The course will be limited to 12 participants

Priority is given to students who pay upon registration.

For fully registered courses, a waiting list will be created. Should vacancies develop, those on the waiting list will be contacted on a first-come, first-served basis.
