Shakespeare in the Spring: Love and Vengeance in Othello and The Merry Wives of Windsor

Course Description

TMI’s second annual Shakespeare in the Spring offering pairs two seemingly disparate plays: Othello and The Merry Wives of Windsor. One, a tragedy that deals heartrendingly with issues of race and all-consuming jealousy and the other a light-hearted comedy that places Falstaff in the comic setting that Elizabeth I allegedly wanted to see him in.

This six-week course discusses these plays, both on the schedule for this summer’s Stratford Festival, because they each provide a very different take on two human passions: love and the desire for revenge. While Iago plots Othello’s tragic downfall, leading him to murder his love Desdemona, the Merry Wives of Windsor plot the downfall of Sir John Falstaff and of one of their own jealous husbands.

What different views are we given of vengeance and love when moving from the tragic to the comic register? What do we learn about the workings of human passion and folly by looking at the fall of a great man and that of a classic comic figure? We will look at these and other questions through a careful reading of the plays, discussion of some works of secondary literature, and a viewing of the 1995 movie Othello, starring Laurence Fishburne and Kenneth Branagh.

Please note, that all courses have a maximum enrollment of 18 students.

Priority is given to students who pay upon registration.

For fully registered courses, a waiting list will be created. Should vacancies develop, those on the waiting list will be contacted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Please note that we do not allow participants to audit courses for free.
