Join us for a walk down Québec fashion’s memory lane at the McCord Museum. Fashion designer Jean-Claude Poitras’s illustrious and international career spanned the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Many Montrealers have worn his designs, but what is their story?
From whom and what did Poitras draw inspiration? What constraints informed his ready-to-wear fashions? How do they interact with the important market forces and social changes of his time? Which kinds of women was he designing for and how did they drive his work? How are his designs both a reflection of and a challenge to the Montreal he knew? As women began climbing corporate ladders in the 70s and 80s, what were the new rules of dressing for success?
We will consider these and other questions, using as the basis for our discussions recorded interviews with Poitras, selected readings, and a guided visit to the McCord’s exhibition Jean-Claude Poitras: Fashion and Inspiration. M. Poitras will be our guide when we tour the exhibition at the McCord.
Les participants seront invités à s'exprimer en anglais ou en français.
