Barbara Kingsolver: Fictions & Truths for a Climate of Change

Literature

Course Description

How do the stories we tell shape the future we end up living? What kinds of truth are proper to fiction? Where do scientific truths fall short? How is our current storytelling failing our planet, our culture, our best selves? How can scientific truth and narrative truth cooperate to lift us to a more sustaining vision? How can we tune to a greater harmony the roles of citizen, inhabitant, consumer, landowner, storyteller? How can we tell a better story of the earth and all the life upon it?

The writings of Barbara Kingsolver—novelist, scientist, poet, environmentalist, essayist, and gardener—will lead us into in dialogue with these and other questions. While our present reality may be describable using facts, our future—and our fate—exist most vividly as stories. Join us for an 8-week reconsideration of the stories of the earth and its inhabitants.
