Portraits and Still Life
Art History
Course Description
The comprehensive and wide-ranging collection at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) can be overwhelming. Where do you start? How can you make the most of a visit to the Museum? This course is designed to help you with these questions.
The first session of this course will focus on the formal portrait, of which there are many at the MMFA. We will consider how the result is ultimately a mediation between the artist and the sitter. The second session will look at different types of still-life painting and the complex meanings they can have and messages they can convey.
Two in-person lectures will introduce the works we will be exploring in these museum visits. The week following each lecture, we will meet at the MMFA to engage with the art discussed directly. This will give participants the chance to form their own opinions and make their own judgments about the works.
Please note that this course has a maximum enrollment of 16 students and that TMI does not allow participants to audit courses for free.
